Date marks sad history

To the Packet:

The saddest day of the Hebrew calendar -- Tish B'Av -- the ninth day of Av was Thursday.

According to historical documents, it was on this date that the first Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE. The second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE on this date. In 1492, King Ferdinand set this date as the final day a Jewish person was allowed to be in the entire country of Spain. Years later, World War I, which began the downward spiral towards the Holocaust, began on the ninth of Av. Later, deportations from the Warsaw Ghetto to death camps began on Av 9.

The story is told of how Napoleon Bonaparte saw Jews shedding tears and praying on Tish B'Av. He asked about the cause of their mourning. When it was explained to him that they were upset because of their removal from their land 1,800 years earlier, he reportedly said, "A people who can still mourn for their homeland after so many years have a real hope for regaining it."

The militant Islamic beast that is waging war against Israel is continuing the pattern set by oppressors thousands of years earlier. Worse than a Friday the 13th, 9 Av commemorates some of the most horrible events in Biblical and world history. Will the 9th of Av continue to herald pain for Israel and the Jewish people and spill over into all of Western civilization? Our faith in God says, with His aid, we shall survive this also.
