One of my friends and study partners wrote a letter to the editor of our local newspaper, in response to the back and forth letters, of pro- Zionists and anti- Zionists, few telling the whole truth, and each using rhetoric and propaganda. He quoted me from my essay and speech on Talmudic and Judaic Pathways to Peace. I have published it for you below to read.
''Subject: Israeli-Palestinian Ping Pong
Dear Editor:
One should not lie. It is impossible to explain 3500 years of history in 250 words, or at all, which is why the signers of the 1993 Oslo Accords agreed not to discuss the past and to deal with the present and future.
It is written that the inheritance of the Jews is the Torah. The "Land" (spreading to the eastern side of the Jordan), belongs to Abraham's ''offspring'' (Gen. 12:7). This includes Isaac, Ishmael, and 6 other sons. Just as Isaac and Ishmael peacefully reconciled to bury Father Abraham, so must their descendents today, find a just way of living in peace and harmony.
"He will adjudicate among the peoples, and discipline many nations; they will break down their swords into shovels, their spears into pruning hooks: nations will not raise swords against each other, not train for war any more." (Isa. 2:2-4).
"Justice and Peace are connected. Justice is first established. Afterwards peace is achieved. The aggrieved has the right to justice. Peace without justice is surrender. It plants the seeds of future warfare," writes Rabbi Arthur Segal. ''But any agreement must guarantee safety to all citizens including the cessation of terrorist bombings, rocket attacks, kidnappings, as well as economic blockades.''
May He who makes peace in high places, make peace for us, for Israel, the Middle East region, and the entire world.
