RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: PARASHA SHOFTIM: PALIN AS A LESSON: JEWISH RENEWAL:

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:PARASHA SHOFTIM: PALIN AS A LESSON: JEWISH RENEWAL: JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

Shalom:

This Shabbat's Torah portions is entitled Shoftim,[ Judges], and speaks about how our judges and rulers must have a level of holiness more than the average person. We are not to be looking for a soccer mom or fighter pilot as our leaders.

A special holiness is demanded from our kings, our political leaders. Our kings were obligated to write their own Torah scrolls and carry them with them at all times (Deut. 17:18-20). They were also obligated to study it daily. The
Kabbalists study the Hebrew word "melech" (king). They say it alludes to three words: "moach" (brain), "lev" (heart), and "kaveid" (liver).

The liver filters the blood before sending it to the heart. The heart refines the blood further before sending it to the brain. Before our kings reached a decision, they had to go through a process of intellectual and spiritual refinement.

Now, my friends, while in Rabbinic school, a wise old rabbi told me, that the best place to get ideas for sermons, was to hang at a Huddle House at 3 AM on a Saturday night, or watch very late night television.

So these are things I heard:

"Governor. Palin announced that her 17-year-old daughter was five months pregnant. O-ho, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before."

"Palin has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards'."

"Turns out Governor. Palin is a lifelong member of the NRA and a longtime hunter. Another vice president who's a hunter, what could go wrong there?"

"Remember when the Republicans compared Barack Obama to Britney Spears? Now they've got their own Jamie Lynn Spears."

"The Palin family crisis has been solved now. The baby is being adopted by Angelina Jolie."

"The Tuesday night RNC theme night is, 'Who is  John McCain?' The theme for Wednesday night is, 'Who forgot to check and see if the vice president's daughter is pregnant?'"

"Sarah Palin's got a 4-month-old of her own, she's about to become a grandmother and she's partnered with John McCain. How many diapers can one woman possibly change?"

"Did you see Sarah Palin standing next to John McCain at the podium the other day? Didn't it look like one of those commercials where the daughter is trying to find a nice home to put Dad in?"

"Back in 1984, Sarah Palin finished second in the Miss Alaska pageant. Now she might be the vice president. You know what that means? For the first time in history, a beauty-pageant contestant might actually bring about world peace."

"Regarding the Republicans suspending political speeches for a day due to Hurricane Gustav: We must get back through this storm as Americans -- and tomorrow it's back to printing Obama Bin Laden T-shirts."

"Palin said she had not enjoyed smoking marijuana.. Isn't that amazing? Something like 100 million Americans have smoked marijuana. The only people who don't seem to enjoy it are running for office."

''The RNC is in the Twin Cities: St. Paul is way better ... Minneapolis is Danny DeVito to St. Paul's Arnold Schwarzenegger."

"True fact: This year there are only 36 black delegates at the convention in Minnesota. As a result, there are now 37 black people in Minnesota."

Our Shabbat's Haftarah from Isaiah says "Awaken yourself! Awaken yourself! "(Is. 51:17) and "Wake up! Wake up!...Shake the dust from yourself!" (Is. 52:01-02). Isaiah begs us to herald in "peace...good...and salvation"(Is. 52:07) and to "Turn away! Turn away!" (Is.52:11) from injustice and "contamination."

"Justice, justice, shall you pursue"(Deut. 16:20). These are five words , which if everyone followed, our task of Tikun Olam (repair of the world) would be finished. The pursuit of justice has been a challenge to all
people. Some groups choose to ignore it all together. The Hebrew word for justice is "tzadakah." This is the same word commonly translated as "charity" that we read about in last week's Torah portion.

For those that truly understand Judaism, and its off-spring religion Christianity, war is a last resort option. Social services for the poor, the widow, the orphan, the ill, the stranger in our midst,  are part of our creeds. Justice in the way we treat our fellows and justice is the way our nation treats other nations, which is why the word is used twice. These are Judaic and Christian value. Anyone calling themselves a righteous Jew or Christian and promoting ideals that are against these mitzvoth, needs a basic refresher course.

In a few months there will be an election in our great country. Let us police and judge our hearts and minds. Let us not be bribed by promises of increased personal financial portfolios. Let us analyze our choices without prejudice. Let us pray that we can reach a decision on whom to vote for and who will be picking the next group of Supreme Court judges, using Torah ethics and teachings as our guide.

Shabbat Shalom,
