RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL: TEPHILAT HA DEREK:WAYFARERS PRAYER

TEPHILAT HA DEREK:
WAYFARER'S PRAYER:

Shalom:

Many people approach me quite often with their fears. One major fear that folks have is the fear of flying and/or traveling in general.  I discuss how we can rid ourselves of our fears by understanding their origin. We learn to live a life with experience and faith in an Infinite God, and not depend only on our finite selves.

I explain and teach this in detail in Chapter 5 of ''The Handbook to Jewish Spiritual Renewal: A Path of Transformation for the Modern Jew.'' (001) The Handbook to Jewish Spiritual Renewal - Rabbi Arthur Segal  or  http://www.shop.jewishspiritualrenewal.net/product.sc;jsessionid=F2439471EC5F55905E00562E928D4FCA.qscstrfrnt05?productId=1&categoryId=1

But for those who I meet in airports' gates waiting areas, who are truly frightened with their boarding of an air flight, or for folks beginning train, boat or long car trips, I find that this ancient Jewish prayer, from the Talmud Bavli Tractate Beracoth 29b becomes very soothing for them, as well as me.

As mentioned in my books and essays we rarely pray for ourselves. We are at our best when we ask Ha Shem how we can be of maximum service to Him and our fellows. "Whenever one unites himself with the needs of others, he increases the chance that his prayer will be heard." (Talmud Bavli Tractate Beracoth 30a). This is why the sages wrote the prayer in the first person plural.

So when we help others with their fear of flying and traveling, it helps us also to have a smoother flight and journey. You may wish to print this and take with you the next time you fly.

Many Blessings,
Rabbi Arthur Segal

TEPHILAT HA DEREK: WAYFARER'S PRAYER:

Y'hi rat-zon mil-fan-ek-ha A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu ve-lo-hei av-o-tei-nu she-to-lik-he-nu l'sha-lom v'tatz'i-de-nu l'sha-lom v'tad-rik-he-nu l'sha-lom, v'tag-i'e-nu lim-hoz hef-tze-nu l'Cha-yim ul-sim-Cha ul-sha-lom.

Ba-rukh ata A-do-nai sho'me'a t'fi-la.

May it be Your will, Adoshem, our G!d and the G!d of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace.

May You rescue us from the hand of every foe, ambush along the way, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to earth. May You send blessing in our handiwork, and grant us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us.

May You hear the sound of our humble request because You are G!d Who hears prayer requests. Blessed are You, Adoshem, Who hears prayer.

Recite three times each :

Jacob went on his way and angels of G!d encountered him,

Jacob said when he saw them, "This is a G!dly camp."

So he named the place Ma-cha-nay-im. 1

For Your salvation I do long, HASHEM, 2

I do long, HASHEM, for Your salvation,

HASHEM, for Your salvation I do long.

Behold I send an angel before you to protect you on the way

And to bring you to the place that I have prepared.3

Recite three times:

HASHEM will give might to His nation,

HASHEM will bless His nation with peace. 4

Amen!  [(1)Genesis 32:2-3, (2) 49:18, (3) Exodus 23:20, (4) Psalms 29:]
