Shalom and Peace:
In our continuation of studying international Jewish communities and understand their survival and influence let's look at the Jews of Chochin, India. India's 5000 Jews have 7 distinct ancient groups: Bene Israel, Cochin Jews, [ Malabar or Black], European White Jews , Baghdadi, Bene Menashe, Bene Ephriam, and Calcutti Jews.
The first Jews in India were in southwestern Cochin, Kerala. They are so-called "Black Jews," who spoke Judeo-Malayalam . They settled in the southwest Malabar coast after the Kingdom of Israel split after King Solomon's death circa 900 BCE. Many came during the Babylonian exile of 586 BCE and especially when 70 years later, Persia annexed Babylon and India. This Indian Jewish community is mentioned in the Bible's Book of Esther , 450 BCE. After the 1492 expulsion from Spain, Pardesi Jews, aka "White Jews," settled, speaking Sephardic Ladino, in Goa, north of Cochin. When the Portuguese brought their Inquisition to Goa, these Jews escaped to Cochin.
Some Jews came to Cranganore ( near Cochin) after the Jerusalem Temple's destruction by the Romans in 70 C.E. These Cranganore Jews had their own principality for 1400 years until a leadership dispute broke out between two brothers in the 15th century. Being weakened by the split, in 1524, Arabs attacked the Cranganore Jews to steal their pepper trade. These Jews fled to Cochin protected by the Hindu Raja, who had granted Jews their own quarter (still called "Jew Town" ), and land for a synagogue, right next to his palace and protection.
Sadly, the Portuguese occupied Cochin soon after and persecuted Jews until the Dutch came in 1660. In 1795, Cochin passed to England. Jews prospered and lived in Kerala's towns of Cochin, Ernakulam and others. The three groups (black, white, and brown (from intermarriages) had their own synagogues and cemeteries, and in a similar caste style, stayed segregated from each other. It took Ghandi to force these groups to worship and bury together. The 1568 Paradesi Synagogue is the only one still open, but the others are available to see and are protected by the Hindus. Only 7 Cochi Jewish families remain. It is a lovely place to visit, and India is one of the world's few counties where Jewish citizens lived unmolested by their governments.

JEWISH WEDDINGS OFFICIATED BY RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: TRADITIONAL, INTERFAITH, CO-OFFICIANT , DESTINATION
"One of the Joys of being a Rabbi," says Rabbi Arthur Segal," is working closely with the bride and groom and officiating at their wedding." He can do this with couples living nearby or with couples having a destination wedding in the greater beautiful Hilton Head Island area.
Rabbi Arthur Segal helps develop a custom ceremonywith the couple so that each word in the ceremony rings true to them. His ceremonies can range from the very traditional to whatever the couples desires. Rabbi opines that this is the couple's special day, and to treat each wedding as unique.
For those who are having an interfaith wedding, Rabbi takes special care to respect both traditions, again with total input from the couple. He will be pleased to co-officiate at weddings, using non-Trinitarian language.
Rabbi Arthur Segal also will do recommitment marriage ceremonies with the same care as he does weddings.
Rabbi will work closely with the wedding planer and/or caterer to make sure the wedding is seamless, and the bride and groom can totally enjoy themselves on their special day.
Rabbi Arthur Segal is available, and actually prefers, to be at the rehearsal, to ensure all is going smoothly, and to get to know the bridal party, and family, before the actual wedding day.
For those that wish to have a Ketubah, rabbi will work closely to make sure everyone's name has correct calligraphy on the document, in English and Hebrew, so the signing ceremony is flawless.
For a beautiful gallery of Ketubahs go to JudaicConnection.com (My couples receive a $15 shipping discount)
Rabbi Arthur Segal tries to limit his weddings to Hilton Head, SC, Bluffton, SC, Palmetto Bluff, SC, Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC, but has been known to make himself available elsewhere, even out of the USA. He will also conduct weddings and recommitment ceremonies on cruise ships.
In keeping with Jewish ethics, if the couple resides in Rabbi Arthur Segal's town, Rabbi will ask, unless there are some special circumstances, if the couple has first asked the local pulpit rabbi to officiate.

HAVE TORAH, WILL TRAVEL
A luxury cruise ship is an exciting and fun location for your memorable Jewish wedding ceremony, Whether it is a traditional wedding ceremony or a custom interfaith ceremony, or aJewish vow renewal, Rabbi Arthur Segal has done many of them, and will be pleased to help you as well.
Jewish cruise shipboard weddings allow you to combine your reception and ceremony with a cruise honeymoon, and offer the option of your friends and family joining you on the vacation (if you want them to!).
With so many cruise ships leaving from so many ports in Florida, with so many different lengths of days, you can choose a cruise destination perfect for you and your guests. Couples are choosing Jewish cruise ship weddings over the traditional hometown wedding in greater numbers today than ever before.
Jewish cruise weddings allow you to plan a beautiful wedding at a fraction of the cost of a traditional land wedding. Plus, Rabbi Arthur Segal along with the cruise staff will assist you in every step.
Jewish cruise weddings can take place while the ship is in port, before embarkation, allowing family and friends to attend, and then disembark before sailing, if they wish. Or your guests can decide to cruise with you. Couples can choose to have their wedding on board the ship or at a land location. You can be married in a shipboard non- denominational chapel, while the ship is docked in one of Florida's many ports, or on a world-renowned beach in St. Thomas, USVI, in a rooftop garden in Italy, or even fly by helicopter to be married on an Alaskan glacier! Rabbi Arthur Segal is with you at every location.
You are welcome to invite your quests on board for the Jewish cruise ship wedding and a celebratory meal, or invite your guests to join you on the cruise to celebrate your wedding and honeymoon on the ship with you.
Rabbi Arthur Segal is on cruise ships on all lines serving as rabbi and clergy. If he is already booked to be on board, or whether he needs to add some time on board to accommodate you, it is Rabbi Arthur Segal's sincere pleasure to do so.
