Take a stand against Taliban
To The Packet:
As citizens of a proud democracy, we cannot be other than appalled by the Taliban pronouncement requiring non-Muslims to wear identifying clothing. Not only does this action put us in mind of Nazi policies labeling Jews with yellow stars and other minorities with distinctive badges, but it reminds us as well that the warning signs of religious persecution can be ignored only at our own peril.
The record of the Taliban is a dire indication that without the loud, vigorous, and united condemnation of such behavior by the entire world community, such horrific actions will continue and even increase.
We therefore need to call upon the nations of the world, including our own government, to speak out clearly against this latest outrage by the Taliban and urge it be reversed.
As German Rev. Martin Niemoller wrote: "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade-unionists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a trade- unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me."
