RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:JEWISH RENEWAL:JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL:BAR RAFAELI:ELIEZAR
A Short Snap Shot of Rabbi Arthur Segal
Shalom:
One of our Talmidim emailed that she was taught as a little girl the Gemorah of Rabbis Shimon bar Kahana and Eliezar, with the splinter and toothpick, but as a story, of two rabbis walking and one about to pick a flower, and the other stopping him, with the same admonition. {If everyone picked a flower there would be no more flowers left in the world}.RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL:JEWISH RENEWAL:SHIMON BAR KAHANA
She thought that maybe she remembered incorrectly but when she read another Talmid's wonderful post about wildflowers she was certain, and we thought we'ld ask the group if anyone was taught this in Hebrew school, with flowers and not toothpicks or wood chips?
Now another of our Talmidim, who is searching the Gemora for Bar Rafaeli, ;-) , writes that in being rigorously honest he does not buy second hand books as this of stealing from an author as the author gets no fee for this sale. Many people
buy one book and copy it many times for classes. He also mentioned how folks steal WiFi from their neighbors, and other things that folks don't think of as stealing, but really is. He wrote: "Many of us steal toothpicks every day of one type or another and do not realize it. Sins repeated eventually seem permitted.''
Another wrote in and said she saw an illustration of the Yetzer Ha Ra battling the Yetzer Tov . This is true and is found many times in our Talmud. I site this example in my "The Handbook to Jewish Spiritual Renewal : A Path of Transformation for the Modern Jew:" A rabbi said his Yetzer Ha Ra and his Yetzer Tov battle each other in his head every day like two dogs. His student asked: ''Who wins? '' And the rabbi said: "Whomever I feed the most.''
