RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:JEWISH RENEWAL:JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL: JEWISH CHAPLAIN: GOSET
A Short Snap Shot of Rabbi Arthur Segal
Shalom:
A Jewish Chaplain asked the following question:
'' Is this more optimistic and motivating position dishonesty? I know that I cannot absolutely predict the future for this resident, but is it wrong to give him hope and a reason to "live"?''
Let me answer as one who has worked with hospice and hospital patients and their families and have dealt with Jewish illness, dying and death issues.
The Talmud clearly tells us that :''Gadol k'vod habriyot - Great is the value of human dignity"- Talmud Bavli Tractate Beracoth 19b-20b.
And until someone is in the state of being a goset, when we are 100% sure that they are going to die in 3 days, {which is nearly impossible to know now 100% with modern care), they are to be treated and spoken to as though they will recover. We cannot talk to them about funeral plans for example. So, for a Chaplain to give one hope that he may regain health and mobility , because it is all in Ha Shem's hands anyway, is 100% Jewish and proper. It is not lying and it is rigorously honest.
Remember, you are there as a chaplain. Chaplains are there for matters of the Spirit. As long as we believe in a living G!D, we always have Tikvah...hope. The physician has other obligations. As a Jewish chaplain, or a rabbi, we need to understand that no one but Ha Shem knows the day of one's death, which is why we do teshuvah and vidui every day. So cheering a patient on Spiritually to try to get some medical improvement is not only honest, but just, and life-affirming, as well as in the best traditions of Judaism and healing.
Bless you in your work, Chaplain!!.
Shalom,
Rabbi Arthur Segal
